EXPERIMENTAL WORK
I decided to experiment with various media to create a unique style. This piece uses spirit markers which give a graphic design style image
SKETCH WORK
This sketch is produced by using charcoal. I decided to look at a photo I had taken to help me develop an image into what could be a final piece. This image had given me the idea for using the idea of archways and passage ways which show the path to discovery and finding identity.
FINAL PIECE OF PROJECT
In unit 4 I looked at my Italian and English culture and studied them in detail. In development I looked at photographs throughout my sketchbook which highlighted the theme of discovery. My final piece is full of detail which shows the sense of full discovery of both cultures. I wanted to show a boost of colours and life through the painting so that I could demonstrate the feeling of a complete knowing of my background. The pathway represents the road of discovery and the idea of walking through an English landscape shows the sense of belonging
WORKING FROM MY OWN PHOTOGRAPHS
In my development of the project, I decided to take on the knowledge and tips I gathered from the artist study to work on creating my own photographs and using them to produce sketches which could be developed into a final piece. I have used graphite which represented the failure of life within the relationship through the devoid of colour which graphite makes. The quick expressive marks gave it the rough texture conveying the painful emotions of the characters in the relationship.
KATHE KOLLWITZ SKETCH
I also looked at the work of Kathe Kollwitz. This helped me to discover the importance of increasing sketching techniques, and reducing the amount of detail within a drawing in order to convey negative emotion of heartache in a more approachable way. It significantly proved to indicate a loss of memorable moments within a relationship. Studying Kollwitz’s work had given me the insight I needed for my development in the project.
I wanted to show this by using charcoal to create the sketch.
ARTIST STUDY
At A level in unit 3, I looked at the emotions and story telling of heartbreaks within the theme of journey. I decided to observe the work of Edvard Munch as I saw a connection between his detail and story telling which I wanted to portray throughout my work. The first slide of this portfolio shows the famous piece “weeping nude”. I used oil pastel to create my version of the piece so that I could blend colours and to create texture.
DEVELOPING A PHOTOSHOOT (2)
This is another image with I took to create an autumn theme. I wanted to show innocence too with I tried to capture through the specific pose of the figure. I edited the image to make it look old and slightly faded and placed a layer above of old letters to create the lines shown in the image. The purpose of the letters is to show that personal and innocent outlook of this season.
DEVELOPING A PHOTOSHOOT
I did a photo shoot with the theme of autumn in mind. This photo I edited to sepia so that the colours associated with autumn would be represented. This is a project which I have also undertaken. I wish to take this on further to create a final piece which would hopefully convey imagination using both photographic images and drawings.
EXTRA MEDIA WORK
During my gap year, I am working on developing my skills to how I want a certain image to look. I wanted to create an abstract feel by playing with the angle which the picture is captured and the editing of colours. This project is a working progress.
Heart Sculpture
To study heartbreaks further I decided to make a heart sculpture to get a visual image of the heart. This I did decide to develop further into an idea by showing a heart split in two but this was dismissed as I wanted to be more imaginative with my final piece.
